George Eaton Cranfill settled near the future site of the gap around 1851, but the first sign of organized community development did not occur until May of 1879. That was when Sam Cranfill succeeded in moving a nearby Hamilton County post office across the county line into Cranfills Gap.
The town's name was subsequently derived from the name of the area's first settler and the fact that it was located in a gap. Over the next decade, the town developed to include 3 stores, a blacksmith shop, a saloon and 2 physicians.

In 1886, St. Olaf Church, a Lutheran church constructed of rock, was built in a rural Norwegian community a few miles from Cranfills Gap. Just as the community's Norwegian population has built the church, so too did the new church help strengthen the growing Norwegian community.
As their numbers expanded, more of the Norwegian immigrants came to live in the gap, and the parishioners grew tired of traveling to the country for services. As such, they built a new brick church in Cranfills Gap in 1917, firmly establishing the legacy of the Norwegian population in our town.

Average high temperatures reach 95 degrees in late July/early August and average lows only drop to 31 degrees in January. Precipitation averages 2.8 inches monthly and there is just 1 inch of average snowfall annually.
Hamilton General Hospital and Goodall Witcher Healthcare Foundation serve the area's health care needs from 22 miles outside of town. Cranfills Gap School offers public education to students of every grade level from kindergarten up through the end of high school.
Higher education is provided by many institutions within less than an hour's drive. These include Tartleton State University, McLennan Community College, Central Texas College, Baylor University, University of Mary Hardin - Baylor, Temple College and Texas State Technical College - Waco.
Water recreation is abundant in Bosque County thanks to the Bosque and Brazos rivers as well as 2 lakes, Whitney and Meridian. Head out on your boat, canoe or kayak. Enjoy fishing for many varieties of bass, catfish, crappie, sunfish and more. Swim in fresh waters or hike along the nearby trails. You can do it all here.
Cranfills Gap sponsors two popular annual festivals - our Septemberfest and, each December, the Lutefisk Feast. Both offer lots of food, fun and the opportunity to sample elements of our Norwegian heritage.
